Detroit-area man had his 9-year-old daughter drive him to the store because he had apparently been drinking, police said Monday, and surveillance video from a gas station shows him telling a clerk that his daughter was his “designated driver.”

Brownstown Township Detective Lt. Robert Grant said the girl was sitting behind the wheel in a child’s booster seat before 3 a.m. on Oct. 8, when an officer opened the driver’s side door of the full-sized panel van her father uses for work. He said she was surprised when police pulled her over.

She said to the officer, “What did you stop me for? I was driving good,” Grant told the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.

Someone called police after spotting the pair stopped at the gas station. The caller watched the girl get in the driver’s seat and pull the vehicle onto the road. She drove a couple miles before police pulled her over.

The videotape obtained by The Associated Press shows the van pulling up to the station and walking in with his daughter. He told an unseen clerk that she was driving him around because he had been drinking.

“I got a designated driver,” the man said.

The AP is not naming the father in order to protect the identity of his daughter.

The girl told police that her father had been drinking whiskey all night. She said he had allowed her to drive before.

The father, who told officers he was teaching his daughter to drive, was arrested and refused a Breathalyzer test, Grant said. He was charged with second- and fourth-degree child abuse during an Oct. 10 arraignment. He was ordered to have no contact with his daughter.

His preliminary examination is scheduled for Tuesday.

He also was charged with being a habitual offender and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted. The habitual offender charge stems from convictions on four previous felonies, including receiving and concealing stolen property and unarmed robbery, Grant said.

He was convicted of driving while intoxicated in connection with an October 2007 crash in Wyandotte and had his license restricted for a year, Michigan Secretary of State spokesman Fred Woodhams told the Free Press.

The girl was turned over to her maternal grandfather when police could not reach her mother. The girl’s parents are separated.

Authorities say the 13-month-old, identified by police as Edwin Perocier, was discovered unconscious and unresponsive when responding officers arrived to the family’s Longwood home on Southern Boulevard sometime before 8 a.m. Friday.

The mother apparently called 911 when he failed to wake up.

The boy was transported to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Perocier reportedly swallowed the pills prescribed to his father after opening the bottle. It wasn’t immediately clear if the bottle had a child-safety cap.

The New York Daily News reports that the bottle was given to the child to use as a rattle.

Police a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Perocier’s parents were not immediately identified.

A man accidentally dropped his marijuana outside a Pittsburgh convenience store Monday.

A police officer found the drugs and get this, the man asked the officer if he could have his drugs back.

“Nah, nah, nah that’s not even cool you can say what you want but, I’m going to tell you. I thought you were going to be cool though,” said Miles Bennett.

“Be cool about it? Sir, when I walk up here I find marijuana on the ground and you say ‘excuse me sir like that’s my marijuana,’” said Pittsburgh Police Officer Dwayne Ausbrooks.

Bennett told WPXI how he accidentally dropped the pot when he stopped at the 7/11 on Western Avenue. The moment he saw it on the ground, so did Officer Ausbrooks, who confiscated the contrand.

Bennett then approached the officer, asking if he could have his marijuana back.

“I thought you can’t get in trouble for that little bit,” said Bennett.

“You thought I wouldn’t get in trouble if I gave you back some marijuana,” asked Officer Ausbrooks.

“Well not you, when no one was here till you called everybody,” said Bennett.

“Of course I called, I have a duty and responsibility to uphold the law,” said Officer Ausbrooks.

“I understand that I’m not mad at you I’m just saying,” said Bennett.

“Well yeah I hope you’re not mad at me,” said Officer Ausbrooks.

“I’m just saying there was only $15 of weed I think marijuana should be legal,” said Bennett.

[Reporter]: “You can’t ask this officer to break the law.”

“He knows that, I know that. And I understand,” said Bennett.

[Reporter]: “How did you lose your marijuana?”

“It just dropped out of my pocket,” said Bennett.

Bennett was not arrested because the police officer did not see him holding the bag before he dropped it.

“I went to class, then a teacher called me out of class,” said Sheldon Williams, a Marshall Junior High School student. “She asked me to step outside, then she said we do not supposed to have two parts. We only can have one.”

The parts were two lines in Sheldon’s hair where his father shaved his hair shorter. He said he has worn his hair like that for years.

In the school’s student handbook under the list of prohibited items it listed “hair designs shaved into hair.”

Sheldon’s stepmother said the school did not call her to address the problem, but instead used the marker to color in one of the lines.

“If the parent give you permission to do such things then it’s okay to do that, but to just take the initiative and to say ‘i’m just gonna color his hair with a permanent marker’, that was very disrespectful,” said Philleniea Williams, Sheldon’s stepmother.

Williams took photos of Sheldon’s hair with her phone after he got home from school. In the picture, the bottom of the two lines appears to be filled in.

“I don’t want no sharpie marker in my hair,” Sheldon said.

The school’s principal said it was her first time dealing with that issue and she was told that’s how they dealt with it in the past. She said she should have called a parent and said it will never happen again

59-year old Ivory Black was discovered inside his home in the 5500 block of Santa Cove last week.

He had been shot, stabbed and mutilated.
His son, 23-year-old Jeremy Black, has been charged with his murder.

After Jerika Black discovered her father’s body inside his Whitehaven home last Thursday night she drove to her boyfriend’s house a couple miles away for help.

Her boyfriend, Chris Jackson wasn’t here, but his mother was.

He says Jerika stayed there until police arrived and didn’t even tell his mother what she saw.

“She didn’t say what happened. She was too shaken up,” said Jackson.

Jerika told police she came home and found her father inside his home on Santa Cove and his car missing from the driveway.

Investigators say Ivory Black had been shot and stabbed several times and that his right leg had been cut off at the knee by his attacker.

Police say Jeremy Black was later arrested at a home in South Memphis in his father’s car and that he told relatives he “did it for his mother and sister.”

A woman who didn’t want to be identified says she used to date the victim

“Everybody is real shocked about it because he was real nice to his kids and stuff. You know I don’t know what happened, but I know their mother and Ivory weren’t together and they wanted their dad to be with their mother,” said the woman.

Jackson says Jerika is now staying with her mother and still doesn’t want to talk about what happened.

“It’s kind of crazy but, it’s kind of crazy,” said Jackson.

Jeremy Black is charged with 1st degree murder and set to make his first court appearance next week.

36 headstones at the Mormon Island Relocation Cemetery just a quarter mile from Folsom Lake were marked with the racially-explosive “N” word, but it isn’t graffiti. Instead, they were put there by the federal government in 1954 just before the waters of Folsom Dam flooded the Negro Hill Cemetery.

Marcus Farrow couldn’t believe his eyes when FOX40 showed him one of the three dozen headstones at the cemetery. “As far as I’m concerned it’s like defaced, by that word, you know,” he said.

African-American miners first came to the area in 1849 as slaves or free men. “The first group of men who discovered gold in this area was a group of African-American men,” said Melissa Pedroza with the Folsom History Museum.

Mining camps were often named for the ethnicity or nationality of the miners who worked there.

The “N” word was used to describe dozens of sites like gulches, hills and creeks. “I don’t think the “N” word was considered nice at that time either to be honest with you, although it was used much more liberally than it is now,” said Pedroza.
But since the gold rush, the history of violence and discrimination against blacks has placed the word on another level. The negative connotations of he notorious “N” word became even more notorious during the Civil War and for a hundred years after. Critics note that these grave stones were poured by the US Government in 1954.”

The government was apparently using names on geological maps, but some say it should have known better even in 1954.

“It’s derogatory, it’s a demeaning term,” said Farrow. “It shouldn’t be used and it shouldn’t even be written on anything in this point in time.”

There are some though who think the stones should stay as a testament to what times were like a half century ago.

But others believe that could be done with an educational marker or kiosk instead.

A Boy Scout from Troop 645 brought the issue to the forefront and actually got funding to change the headstones when the dispute arose on whether the headstone should be changed or not.

Now the county is wrestling with the legal issue of who has authority to make changes at a historical cemetery.

The incident happened at the Fatima Family Center, at 6600 Lexington Avenue, Thursday afternoon.

Cleveland Police Sgt. Sammy Morris said a grandfather went to pick up his 3-year-old grandson at the day care and an employee gave the man the wrong child.

Why didn’t Grandpa know his own grandchild? WTF

The day care didn’t realize the mistake until the mother of the child came to pick up her son, police said. That’s when they contacted Cleveland police, but at that time the grandfather was on his way back to the day care with the wrong child.

Cleveland police determined this was not a criminal event and they are no longer investigating. No charges will be filed.

The Fatima Family Center is run by the Cleveland Catholic Charities Health and Human Services. The secretary of Catholic Charities Health and Human Services said two employees did not follow pick-up procedures, failing to check a file on each child that lists who can take them home.

During a routine inspection last year, state report shows workers weren’t recording attendance for pre-schoolers walking through the center’s doors.
